Sir Charles Mackerras 1925 - 2010

It was with great sadness that we learnt this morning of the death of Sir Charles Mackerras, one of the great conductors of the 20th century.

Sir Charles was a champion of Czech music and a longtime friend of Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines. He was Conductor Emeritus of the Liverpool Phil with whom he enjoyed a long and distinguished association, beginning in 1985. He conducted the Orchestra many times in concerts in Liverpool, throughout the UK and on tour in Germany, Spain and Switzerland. He was appointed Principal Guest Conductor from 1993 to 1996.

Sir Charles's many distinguished recordings with the Liverpool Phil include Beethoven's complete symphonies; Mahler symphonies Nos. 1 and 5, Moussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition and the works of Delius, all on EMI. He last conducted the Orchestra in 2009, and was due to return to Philharmonic Hall in November this year to conduct a concert of music by Dvorak, Beethoven and Schumann.

Sir Charles was also Conductor Laureate of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and had a relationship with them spanning more than 20 years. Of the many tributes and appreciations paid to him, we found the one written by Rosenna East, Violinist with the SCO, particularly appropriate.
