Limited Availability We fly overnight from Manchester via Amsterdam or Paris to Shanghai and spend five nights in this city that brings together astonishing contrasts between the 19th & 21st centuries.
We will stay in a 4* hotel located in the heart of the city on a bed & breakfast basis. Our programme includes visits to the historic areas of the French Concession and the Bund as well as the 21st century city of Pudong. We will also make an excursion to the historic city of Suzhou - the 'Venice of the Orient '. During our stay we will visit the Expo 2010 site and the Liverpool Pavilion.
In Shanghai we attend the Phil's concert with John Wilson and also their performance at Expo (for which we are awaiting details).
On the 18th October we fly to the historic city of Xi'an. This city of 8 million people is the capital of Shaanxi province in central China, close to the Mongolian border. It is steeped in history as it was the cultural and political capital of China for more than 1,100 years, and also the beginning point of the Silk Road leading west. The city was virtually unknown as a tourist destination until 1974 when a local farmer digging a well unearthed what we now know as the Terracotta Army. The historic city remains encircled by walls some 40 metres thick and so well preserved that you can rent a bike and cycle around the entire city!
We spend two nights in Xi'an visiting all of the major historical sights and then fly to Beijing for the final five nights of our holiday. We stay at a 4* contemporary hotel within walking distance of the Forbidden City and have a complete programme of sightseeing including visits to the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and the Great Wall.
The musical highlight of our visit is the performance of the RLPO with Vasily Petrenko at the Beijing concert hall opened as part of the Olympic Festival - known through China as 'The Egg'!
Our flight home on the 25th is a daylight flight from Beijing leaving lunchtime and (because of the time difference) arriving back into Manchester the same evening.
